Local elections will be held in April, but campaigning began months ago, with pro-India parties competing against pro-China parties. For a nation with a population of less than half a million people, its strategic location has long had both India and China competing for its favor. 2018’s presidential elections saw pro-India candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, defeat pro-China president Abdulla Yameen. Yameen has since been arrested and charged with corruption and money laundering. Solih’s party has been campaigning on an anti-corruption agenda. Pray that these elections will see the right leaders emerge on a local level, who will move the nation forward into greater stability and democracy (The Bible, James 3:13).
