The government of Laos embarked on an ambitious damming project on the Mekong River. The government is pushing ahead with plans in spite of a deadly dam collapse in July, which killed at least 27 people. The dam’s building companies saw that it was deteriorating three days before the collapse but failed to notify the communities in the affected area. The dams are also having a negative impact on the environment and people who make their living off the rivers. Pray that the need to generate more money for this poor nation will not be put ahead of the livelihoods of the nation’s own citizens (The Bible, 1 John 3:17).
